About the Subject

Creating solutions through technology

Technologies at Denmark SHS develops students' ability to design, produce and evaluate solutions for authentic real-world challenges. Students engage with a range of materials, processes, tools and digital systems to create products, services and systems that meet genuine needs.

The WA Curriculum Technologies framework comprises two interrelated strands: Design & Technologies (covering materials, food, textiles and digital systems in a design context) and Digital Technologies (computational thinking, coding, data, algorithms and cybersecurity).

Strand 1

Design & Technologies

Students apply design thinking to create products using a range of materials and processes. Focus areas include food technology, textiles, wood, metal and plastic materials — students design, plan, produce and evaluate their work against user needs and sustainability considerations.

Strand 2

Digital Technologies

Students develop computational thinking and digital problem-solving skills. They design and implement algorithms, write code in real programming languages, collect and interpret data, and understand how digital systems and networks operate in society.

Senior School Pathways

Technologies courses in years
11 & 12

Applied Information Technology (AIT) ATAR is a School Curriculum and Standards Authority WACE course that develops students’ practical and analytical skills in digital technologies, multimedia production, networking, data management, and emerging technologies. Students learn to design and create digital solutions while exploring the social, ethical, and legal impacts of technology in the modern world.

Computer Science ATAR is a course that focuses on computational thinking, programming, database, cyber security, networking, and problem-solving through the design and development of digital solutions. Students learn how computer systems operate, how software is developed, and how algorithms and coding are used to solve real-world problems.

Examines food production, processing, safety and the science behind food systems. Relevant for hospitality, health sciences, agriculture and food industry careers.

Boat Building for Years 11 and 12 provides students with practical skills in marine construction, design, materials technology, and workshop safety through the creation and maintenance of small craft and marine projects. Students develop problem-solving, teamwork, and technical production skills while working with a range of tools, materials, and fabrication techniques.
